Environmental Protection Act

Summary of EPA

The Environmental Protection Act (415 ILCS 5/) is a comprehensive Illinois state law aimed at safeguarding the environment and public health by regulating air, water, and land pollution. Enacted to establish a unified, statewide program, the Act addresses various environmental concerns, including air quality, water pollution, waste disposal, noise, and hazardous substances. It empowers the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) and the Pollution Control Board to implement and enforce regulations, issue permits, and take corrective actions to prevent and mitigate environmental damage. The Act also emphasizes the responsibility of individuals and entities to manage their activities in ways that minimize environmental harm, promoting sustainable practices and conservation of natural resources.
